Jim Taliaferro came to Slaton in 2005 to serve as Superintendent of Slaton Independent School District. After seven years in that role, he accepted a position with Texas Tech University as Superintendent of TTU K-12 in Lubbock. During his tenure, TTU K-12 served more than 1,800 students from around the world, including partnerships and schools in Brazil, China, and other countries. As the program expanded, Jim traveled extensively to support international schools and help strengthen the Texas Tech educational brand globally.
Following his retirement from Texas Tech, Jim began consulting with educational organizations and school districts. He currently advises districts on instructional practices, special programs, facilities planning, and online curriculum options designed to better serve students and communities.
Jim earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Texas Tech University. His educational background and professional experience have provided a strong foundation for leadership, service, and community involvement. Jim and his wife, Shannon, have two children and three grandchildren. They are grateful for the people of Slaton and share a vision of helping the community continue to grow and thrive.
Public Service
Jim currently serves as the Ward II Commissioner for the City of Slaton, where he works to support the city's growth and future success. In addition to his service on the Slaton City Commission, he previously served on the City Council in Stratford. Drawing on decades of leadership experience in education and public service, Jim remains committed to representing the citizens of Ward II and contributing to the continued success of the Slaton community.
