Individuals living within single-family residential zones in the City are welcome to hold garage sales on their properties. A garage sale is an event where used, personal property items may be sold from a residence. With the exception of rummage sales, yard, estate, and moving sales are all considered to be the same and are all permitted. To have a successful event, the following guidelines must be followed.

It is against city ordinance for any person to conduct, or allow to be conducted, a garage sale in violation of the following regulations:

  • Garage sales shall only be conducted on properties owned and permitted for residential use;
  • A Garage Sale Permit must be obtained before your sale.
  • A permit application can be found on the city website or obtained at City Hall. Permits may be picked up at City Hall or printed from the website and must be turned in to City Hall along with the payment.
  • Any person intending to hold a garage sale shall submit an application to the City Secretary’s Office not less than four (4) days prior to the sale. The application must include the names of all participants, their addresses, and the date and time of the sale.
  • A fee of $5.00 will be charged and must be submitted with the application. Organizations exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are exempt from the fee but must still obtain a permit and comply with all other requirements.
  • The garage sale permit must be displayed openly in plain view at the sale location during all hours of the sale. Failure to display the permit constitutes a misdemeanor offense.
  • A garage sale may not be held for more than forty-eight (48) consecutive hours or 2 consecutive days.
  • Only two (2) garage sales are allowed at the same address within a twelve (12) month period.
  • All items sold must be used goods, wares, or merchandise originally purchased for personal or household use and not acquired for resale.
  • No items for sale shall be displayed outside of the residence, garage, or carport unless displayed in the backyard and not visible from a public street.
  • Only one (1) unlighted sign not exceeding twelve (12) square feet is permitted. The sign must be located on the property where the sale is conducted and may not be placed on streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, utility poles, or any public property. The sign is only permitted during the duration of the sale.
  • Garage sale advertising signs may not be posted on streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signal light posts or bases, telephone poles, or electric posts within the city.
  • Any violation of these regulations may result in a fine not to exceed $200.00.”
