Wildlife is a natural part of living in Texas, and many species can be found in and around the City of Slaton. While most wildlife poses no threat when left alone, it is important to know which animals are considered the highest risk for carrying rabies.
The five high-risk rabies carriers are:
• Bats
• Coyotes
• Foxes
• Raccoons
• Skunks
If you encounter any of these animals:
• Keep a safe distance.
• Do not approach, feed, or attempt to capture them.
• If the animal appears healthy and is behaving normally, there is generally no need to report it to Slaton Animal Control.
Contact Slaton Animal Control immediately if you observe any of these animals displaying unusual behavior, including:
• Lack of fear of people
• Aggressive or erratic behavior
• Staggering or difficulty walking
• Signs of illness or injury
• Appearing unusually active during daylight (especially nocturnal animals)
Wildlife and people share the same environment. By respecting wildlife and giving animals plenty of space, we can safely coexist with our native species.
To report a sick, injured, or aggressive wild animal, contact the Slaton Animal Shelter at 806-828-2020, option #2. After normal business hours, weekends, and holidays, the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office dispatcher will notify a Slaton Police Department officer to respond, if appropriate.
Remember: Never attempt to handle wild animals yourself.
